The first round is divided into regions (Northern and Southern played on Tuesday) and contains teams from the English League One and League Two. The matches are single elimination with the winners moving onto the second round. It is one of the lower competitions as most teams in League One and League Two focus on those leagues, the FA Cup, or the Carling Cup. Johnstone’s Paint Trophy Round 1 Recap – Tuesday September 1, 2009

Five matches had to go to penalty kicks as the first round of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy opened on Tuesday. Torquay, Stockport, Bradford, Chesterfield, Huddersfield, and Accrington Stanley all had wins on the road. Chesterfield’s was most impressive as they scored 5 goals while Stockport was able to score 4 goals on the road. For the MK Dons, Jermaine Easter continues his hot streak as he scored two goals and they won 3-1 at home. Other notable results were Norwich City over Brentford 1-0 at home, and AFC Bournemouth topping Yeovil Town 2-1 at home.
