The UEFA Europa League wrapped up its third set of group stage matches on Thursday, October 22, 2009. Overall, there were not too many upsets as many of the favorites in each group leading. Here’s a recap, video highlights, and the latest group standings for the Europa League for the matches on Thursday.
UEFA Europa League Recap – Thursday, October 22, 2009
Benfica crushed Everton 5-0 in one of the more surprising results. However a close look will see that Everton did not field their strongest club and Benfica is a very tough team, especially at home. Shakhtar Donetsk, defending champions, shut out Toulouse 4-0 and look ready for another deep run in the competition.
Ajax, Galatasaray, Panathinaikos, and Lazio all win their matches on Thursday. The Bundesliga teams had mixed results as Werder Bremen drew, Hertha Berlin lost, but Hamburg beat Celtic on the road. Lille defeated Genoa in a battle of Ligue 1 v Serie A.
