Charlie Davies has been released from the hospital and is progressing well in his recovery since a terrible car accident in October. The American striker was on the rise after proving himself in Europe, scoring consistently for the USA National Team, and contributing for Sochaux in Ligue 1. He suffered significant injuries from the car crash and most figured a recovery in time for next summer’s World Cup Finals unrealistic.
Davies begs to differ in a new interview with ESPN’s Jeremy Schaap which will air during the network’s coverage of the 2010 World Cup Draw. ESPN aired a small clip of the interview on Sportscenter in which Davies says his recovery is doing well and he expects to be ready for South Africa next summer.
It’s not known if Davies will fully recover or even be the same player he was before the accident but he’s very optimistic about his return. If he’s able to return at the level he’s capable of, it will definitely improve the USA’s chances at South Africa. He provides another scoring threat and some much needed speed for the Americans. It’s still a long ways until the World Cup and way too early to make any predictions about Davies chances of making the roster. Again, the full interview will be on ESPN2 during their coverage of the World Cup Draw on Friday, December 4, 2009 at 12 PM EST.
