The English Premier League resumed with several midweek matches including Liverpool v Wigan Athletic on Wednesday, December 16, 2009. Were Liverpool able to get a win and get back in track for a top four finish? Here’s a recap along with video highlights of the match.
Liverpool beats Wigan Athletic 2-1 – Video Highlights
Liverpool took an early lead with a goal from David N’Gog in the 9th minute from a corner kick. Wigan wasn’t able to respond in the first half as it ended 1-0. The match continued to remain at 1-0 for Liverpool early in the second half. Fernando Torres did not start for Liverpool but available as a substitute while Steven Gerrard did start.
Torres would come into the match in the second half and scored to give Liverpool a 2-0 lead. The goal was on a breakaway where he dribbled past a goalkeeper and had his shot blocked by a defender but was able to get the rebound quickly. It was not the prettiest of goals but nonetheless one that almost certainly sealed at least a draw if not a win for the home side.
The final minutes were a bit nervy for Liverpool as Wigan would close the gap to 1-2 with a late goal from Charlies N’Zogbia in the 90th minute. It was too little too late as Liverpool would hold on for a 2-1 win.
