The Johnstone’s Paint Trophy aka Football League Trophy finished the semifinal round on Tuesday, February 9, 2010 with the second legs. One of these included Leeds United traveling to face Carlisle United. Carlisle had a 2-1 lead heading into the second leg but Leeds have shown their ability to win matches on the road (in the FA Cup at Old Trafford). The winner would face either Southampton of Milton Keynes Dons in the final at Wembley.
Carlisle United 2-3 Leeds United
Carlisle United would hang on for a 6-5 win on penalty kicks to move onto the final of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy. The match appeared to be over with Carlisle scoring in the 33rd minute.
Adam Clayton scored in the 33rd minute which gave Carlisle a 3-1 aggregate lead at that point but Leeds would respond. Robert Snodgrass scored in the 46th minute to level the match and to make it 3-2 on aggregate. There would be three goals in the final twenty minutes as Carlisle had one and Leeds had two.
The goals were from Kevan Hurst of Carlisle (72nd minute), Jason Crowe (80th minute) of Leeds, and Mike Grella (86th minute) of Leeds. The last goal from Grella tied it at 4-4 on aggregate where it would remain at the end of 90 minutes.
The two teams would have to be separated by penalty kicks. Carlisle had the upper hand early but a missed penalty gave Leeds a chance. The two teams would remain tied 4-4 and 5-5. In the next round, Carlisle’s Matty Robson converted to make it 6-5 and Leeds’ Shane Lowry missed. Carlisle won the match 4-4 (6-5 on penalties) and will now play in the JPT final in March.
