Americans Abroad Weekend Recap – August 21 & August 22

Below is our weekly recap of the weekend in Europe for Americans Abroad. Highlights from this weekend include Sacha Kljestan scoring a goal for Anderlecht in Belgium and several players in the EPL.

Americans Abroad Weekend Recap – August 21 & August 22

Stuart Holden (Bolton Wanderers – English Premier League) – Holden played the full match for Bolton (who won 3-1 over West Ham) and continues to do well in his first full season in the Premiership.

Tim Howard (Everton – English Premier League) – Howard played the full match for Everton as they earned a 1-1 draw against Wolves.

Brad Friedel (Aston Villa – English Premier League) - Friedel was left helpless in goal for Villa who were crushed by Newcastle 0-6 on Sunday.

Carlos Bocanegra (St Etienne – French Ligue 1 ) – He played the full match for St Etienne who drew 0-0 with his old club, Rennes.

Jonathon Spector (West Ham United – English Premier League) – Spector didn’t suit up for West Ham in their 1-3 loss against Bolton.

Brad Guzan (Aston Villa – English Premier League) – Guzan was on the bench for Villa but didn’t get in the match (0-6 loss to Newcastle).

Marcus Hahnemann (Wolverhampton Wanderers – English Premier League) – Hahnemann played the full match in goal for Wolves who drew 1-1 with Everton.

Maurice Edu (Rangers – Scottish Premier League) – He played the full match in central midfield as Rangers won 3-0 against Hibernian.

Sacha Kljestan (Anderlecht – Belgian Jupiler League) – Kljestan scored with a header from a cross as Anderlecht won 3-0 on the weekend. He has done well in his short time with Anderlecht (joined this summer) and already is improving his USA National Team chances by moving to Europe from MLS.

Mike Grella (Leeds United – English Championship) – Grella was on the bench but didn’t play for Leeds (3-1 win over Millwall).

Eric Lichaj (Aston Villa – Aston Villa) – Lichaj was on the bench but didn’t play for Aston Villa (0-6 loss to Newcastle)

Eddie Johnson (Fulham – English Premier League) – EJ didn’t play or suit up for Fulham this past weekend. He doesn’t seem likely to get any playing time unless there are several injuries and could be going on loan this season.

Charlie Davies (Sochaux – French Ligue 1) - Davies is still working to get his fitness back and it’s still unclear how long that will take. He has been getting playing time with the reserve team while trying to work his way back to getting on the first team.

Clint Dempsey (Fulham – English Premier League) – He started up top as a forward but didn’t get any goals in Fulham’s 2-2 draw with Manchester United. While there were rumors about him possibly moving, nothing has happened yet and it seems he could be staying at Fulham.

Michael Bradley (Borussia Monchengladbach – German Bundesliga) – Monchengladbach earned a 1-1 draw as Bradley played the full match in central midfield. He continues to be a regular starter for the club who is expected to finish in the middle of the table.

Steve Cherundolo (Hannover 96 – Bundesliga) – He played the full match at right-back in Hannover’s 2-1 win over Eintracht Frankfurt.
