The USA had several changes but still centered around Landon Donovan, Tim Howard, and Carlos Bocanegra.

The first half was controlled by Mexico who had more possession and would take the lead. Oribe Peralta would score on a volley following a Andres Guardado cross into the box. Even though Mexico were the better side, the USA were able to prevent many clear cut chances as it remained 0-1 at halftime.

In the second half, Klinsmann made several changes which would have an immediate impact. Robbie Rogers, Break Shea, Ricardo Clark, and Juan Agudelo were all brought in during the last 30 minutes of the match. Shea and Rogers would combine in the 73rd minute for the equalizer as the USA had the momentum late in the match.

After the Rogers goal, Mexico were on their heels and had to scramble defensively to hold on for the draw. A controversial decision from the referee would go their way as Rogers got behind the defense and was fouled. It appeared to be a clear red card but instead a yellow was given.

The match ended a few minutes later as the Jurgen Klinsmann era of USA Soccer has officially begin.

USA 1-1 Mexico Match Stats

Scoring Summary: 1 2 F
USA manager Jurgen Klinsmann

“We want to show them (Mexico) that we can compete with them,” he says. “We’re going to give them a fight.”

“It’s exciting playing Mexico right after the Gold Cup final.”

“It’s exciting because you have an opponent that has improved tremendously over the last couple of years. They have brought in a lot of highly talented young players through their ranks and now they belong in the top 10 in the world.”

“It will be one step at a time.”

“You can’t speed up the process.”

“I respect everything that has been done before me.”

“I’m the next one that follows up on their work. There’s a very good base here, a foundation that’s been built. Now it’s up to me to put another level on that foundation.”

USA player Tim Howard

“I feel we were a very good team two months ago and that we’re a very good team now.”

“I know [Klinsmann] will continue to keep us in the direction that we’re going.”

“The most important thing, as he’s mentioned to you guys and to us, is that our focus is on qualifying for the World Cup and going down to Brazil and putting on a heck of a performance.”

“It’s a long way away, I realize that, but it’s still in the front of our minds.

“I think his footprint will be stamped on this team if and when we go to the World Cup and we perform in all the right ways.”

“Ultimately that’s how you judge.”

USA player Landon Donovan

“We’re at kind of a tipping point now where it’s time to really go for it.”

“We’re not worried about if Major League Soccer is going to make it or not anymore.”

“We’re not worried if we have kids that are talented enough. We’ve seen now that we have players that are talented enough to play on the world stage. And we’ve got to start cultivating that more so we’re getting 50, 60, 70, 100 super-talented young kids coming in to choose from like other countries do.”

“Jurgen has very positive energy and it’s infectious.”

“I think the guys have already taken to that well. As far as tactical things and style and approach to the way we play, that’s going to take a while. … But I think the energy is good in camp and I think we’re all really excited for what’s coming the next few years.”

“something different is always good when you get into the rhythm of doing the same thing over and over.”

“My initial reaction was one of a little sadness and compassion for Bob.”

“We’ve been with him for five years and when you’re with a coach that long, whether you always agree or disagree, you become close to that coach. That was a little difficult.”

“There are going to be new objectives, new expectations and new things to learn.”

“And this is our first crack at it. There is a little bit of a process leading up to [World Cup] qualifying but every step is going to be important. And it starts tomorrow.”

Mexico player Rafa Marquez

“It will be different United States [under Klinsmann], I usually think the changes are always good at the beginning and I think we all know Jurgen and good work he did with Germany.”

“It’s another phase is totally different, I think Jurgen fairly well known American football has been around for a while now and you will benefit enough to this team,” he said.

“Surely he will give another face to the U.S. team.”

“No way [worries Mexico], I think we have to focus on our work and try to make things right.”

“I think we’ve been doing a very important process in this era of ‘Chepo’.”

“We did a good job in the Gold Cup and now we have to have continuity.”

“Perhaps most players are already known in the U.S. team, but will be different and will have a different dynamic than the one we saw in the Gold Cup.”

USA v Mexico Prediction

USA wins 3-2

USA v Mexico Betting Odds

USA win – 6/4

Draw – 23/10

Mexico win – 7/4

USA v Mexico Live Online

The match can be seen at <a

The goal was a result of a free kick that the Mexican goalkeeper initially saved but Pereira was able to pounce on the rebound quickly.

Mexico end the tournament with no points and three losses. This was not a major surprise as they brought an inexperienced squad and focused most of their attention on the Gold Cup, which preceded the Copa America.

Uruguay will play Argentina on Saturday in the quarterfinals.

Uruguay 1-0 Mexico Match Stats

<span

Michael Bradley scored the first in the 9th minute with a header from a corner kick while Landon Donovan calmly finished from inside the box in the 22nd minute.

There were a few surprises in the USA lineup as Freddy Adu started while Donovan and Clint Dempsey alternated as forwards. Adu responded with the start and throughout the night created chances.

After going down 0-2, Mexico would respond and control the final 68 or so minutes of the match. They scored two goals before halftime with a 28th minute one from Pablo Barrera and 35th minute equalizer from Andres Guardado.

In the second half, the Mexicans continued to dominate possession and would take the lead with a 49th minute Barrera goal. It should be noted that starting right back Steve Cherundolo did leave in the first half because of an injury which had a major impact. Eric Lichaj was moved to right back (from left back) and Jonathan Bornstein (who hadn’t played in the tournament until this match) was brought in to play left back.

Even though they were outplayed for most of the match, the United States did nearly level the match with a Clint Dempsey shot that hit off the post in the 59th minute. Eventually, Mexico would put the match out of reach with a brilliant 76th minute Giovanni Dos Santos goal.

Dos Santos had possession in the box as Howard was off his line. The Mexican would then send a shot just under the crossbar and over defender Lichaj who was trying to head it away. There was nothing Lichaj could do as Dos Santos gave Mexico a commanding two goal lead.

The final whistle would sounds about 15 minutes later as Mexico retains the Gold Cup trophy and booked their place in the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup. It will be a tough loss for the Americans who had a 2-0 lead but struggled defensively when Steve Cherundolo was injured.

USA 2-4 Mexico Match Stats

<span

What will each team need to do to win the match and what will be important factors?

Below are some keys to the match.

USA v Mexico – Keys To the Match

Javier Hernandez (Chicharito) – He’s been the top scorer in this tournament and arguably the best player in CONCACAF right now. He’ll need to continue to provide scoring for Mexico but will face the toughest defense yet in the Americans. If he scores a goal, Mexico’s chances are very high to win.

Landon Donovan – After not starting the last two matches, Donovan will likely start in the final. He’s not had a great tournament and will need to play much better if the USA are to reclaim the Gold Cup trophy.

The Crowd – It’s no surprise that most of the fans at the Rose Bowl will be supporting Mexico. This could prove to be a great benefit to Mexico and also a hindrance. If Mexico are able to start strong and take an early lead, then the fans should provide a great atmosphere that will make it feel like a home match. However, if Mexico struggle then the pressure could mount and the crowd could be a negative.

Guardado/Salcido – Two of Mexico’s starters face injury concerns which could have a major impact on the match. If one or both aren’t able to start then it could make them vulnerable, especially with Salcido who plays left-back.

Freddy Adu/USA Bench – In the Panama match, it was an appearance by Freddy Adu in the second half that sparked their goal. The match is likely to be close which should provide an opportunity for Adu. He is the kind of player for the USA that they need against a side like Mexico, who will probably have more possession but be vulnerable on the counterattack.

USA player Landon Donovan

“The last two games, it made sense for me not to start the game.”

“We’ll see tomorrow. Bob’s told me that they’re still debating on how they’re going to use me tomorrow.”

“No competitor ever likes to start on the bench.”

“What’s important for me is not when I play, where I play, how many minutes I’m playing — it’s that I’m effective when I do play. I know I’m fit enough to play, I know I’m capable of playing.”

“I’m going to be prepared either way.”

“The important thing is that when I do get on the field that I’m ready and I’m helping the team win.”

USA manager Bob Bradley

“We like to have the flexibility (to have Donovan start or come of the bench).”

“I think our ability to move the ball around and play quickly — you could see it improve in recent years and, in this last stretch, we feel it’s something that has helped us, so we’d like to keep building upon that as well.”

USA player Tim Howard

“It’s been the same (the rivalry).”

“It’s been the same since I was a kid watching it. It’s the same today. It’s passion. There’s a ton of respect, but yet again it borders hatred.

“But it’s passion. It’s good. I think we have very healthy respect for them and whether they want to say it or not, they have healthy respect for us and they should.”

Mexico manager José Manuel de la Torre

“We’ll wait [before making a decision to start Guardado and Salcido].”

“They took a few knocks and if they are not 100 percent to start, then we’ll have that conversation then.”

“For years now this has transformed into something very important to the Mexican people that live in the United States. It is a clásico.”

“That makes for a heated atmosphere. But the final is still a soccer game featuring two strong, well coached teams that have worked hard to reach a final we will enjoy.”

Mexico player Andres Guardado

“I’m ready to play [on Saturday].”

“We trained in the morning and we tested the ankle. It bothers me a little, which is normal, but I feel fine to play.”

Mexico player Carlos Salcido

“It’s complicated, but we’ll see.”

“I’ll be honest, I don’t know what will happen. Still, if I have to be on the bench and support my teammates, I’ll do it.”

<span
